Clips from our recent Region of Sanctuary conference in Bradford, 25 February 2010.

NRC and the City of Sanctuary movement held a very well attended and stimulating conference in Bradford in February. Over 150 participants from around the region attended. Following the conference moves are now afoot to create a strategy fo creating Sanctuary in Yorkshire and Humber as a way of mobilising the goodwill of people throughout the region who want to build a culture of hospitality for people seeking sanctuary.

Presentations at the conference included:

Hannah Lewis on Forced Migration in Yorkshire and Humber
Workshop on Destitution
Workshop on Regional Integration                                                                                                        Campaign Against Cashlessness

Unifying Threads artwork exhibited in US

Wednesday, 18 August 2010 13:45

The “Unifying Threads” artwork, created by over 30 Barnsley women, is currently on exhibition in Portland, Oregon in the USA as part of an International Women Artists exhibition. It joins women’s art from all around the world and portrays a positive image of Barnsley as it becomes an increasingly multicultural town.

“Unifying Threads” was a project led by Panni Poh Yoke Loh and supported by Northern Refugee Centre with funding from the National Lottery. It brought together women from a wide variety of backgrounds to develop patchwork pieces that were all sewn together with the emblem of Barnsley to create a stunning artwork. Some of the contributors have lived in Barnsley all their lives, some moved there for work or personal reasons, others were located in the town when seeking asylum from war-torn areas of the world.

After being on display at Barnsley’s Civic Theatre, the artwork toured a number of local venues before being sent off to be exhibited in the US where it will be on display until the end of August.
